Australia defeated India by six wickets in the fifth and final Test match in Sydney, securing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a 3-1 series victory. Chasing a modest target of 162 runs on Day 3, Travis Head (34*) and debutant Beau Webster (39*) guided Australia to a comfortable win. For India, Prasidh Krishna stood out with three wickets.
This victory also confirmed Australia’s place in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-2025 final, where they will face South Africa in June.
The Sydney pitch proved to be a bowler’s paradise, offering plenty of assistance throughout the match. India resumed their second innings on Day 3 at 141 for 6 but managed to add only 16 more runs before being dismissed for 157. Australia’s Scott Boland spearheaded the attack, completing a six-wicket haul in the innings and a match haul of ten wickets. His brilliant performance earned him the Player of the Match award.
India had taken a slender 4-run lead after scoring 185 in their first innings and restricting Australia to 181. Despite the close first innings, Australia dominated the game in the second innings to seal the series. Jasprit Bumrah was named Player of the Series for his exceptional bowling throughout the contest.
With this emphatic win, Australia continues to assert its dominance in Test cricket and prepares for the ultimate showdown against South Africa in the WTC final.
