The United States Vice-President Kamala Harris has formally secured the Democratic presidential nomination.

Harris who became the first Indian-American to win the nomination from a major political party, elected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice-presidential candidate today.

Harris’s nomination became official after a five-day round of online balloting by Democratic National Convention delegates ended yesterday night. The party, in a statement, revealed that 99 percent of delegates had cast their ballots for Harris.

She is expected to ceremoniously accept the nomination at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago later this month, after which she can be certified on state ballots.
